Trophy Walleye Fishing on Lake Oahe with Fishing the Midwest

Mike Frisch with a big Lake Oahe walleye

Here at Fishing the Midwest, we’re very excited about fishing’s future for several reason. Here’s one of those reasons.

Record Trophy Walleye Fishing on Lake Oahe

Earlier this year, Fishing the Midwest television host Mike Frisch checked in at New Evarts Resort on Lake Oahe near Glenham, South Dakota to fish for walleyes. Not only did he fish for walleyes, he and his partner, area guide and New Evarts owner Gabe Outtrim, caught’em. Their biggest one weighed 11 pounds. When Gabe told Mike that even bigger ones bit in the fall, they made plans to get together again in October.

A 14-Pound Walleye Caught Live on Fishing the Midwest

October came and Mike went. Went back to New Evarts. Fished again with Gabe. Caught a walleye that exceeded 14 pounds. The biggest walleye ever caught live on television in Fishing the Midwest’s 40-year history. Biggest walleye ever caught by a Fishing the Midwest team member. Most anglers don’t catch a walleye ever 10 pounds in a lifetime of fishing, Mike Frisch did it twice in the same year in the same area.

Why Lake Oahe and New Evarts Resort Produce Trophy Walleyes

Mike commented about his big catch. “I am blessed to do what I do, go to the places we go, and fish with outstanding anglers. Catching a walleye that size is among my favorite fishing memories. But I’m going to try to best that 14, and to do that, I’m going to return to Lake Oahe and New Evarts Resort. The area near New Evarts Resort has everything needed to produce trophy walleyes, and the accommodations are outstanding.”

More Than Walleyes: Lunker Bass, Pike and Crappies

Trophy walleyes certainly get the Fishing the Midwest crew excited, but in the past several months, Mike and his fishing partners have also boated numerous lunker bass of the largemouth and smallmouth persuasion, northern pike, and crappies. Progressive regulations, a longer growing season, outstanding equipment, and lots of time-on-the-water have convinced us that fishing in many places is getting better, and that’s why we’re very excited and already looking forward to next year’s open water fishing.
